Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the extent of relationships between the body-related attitude, self esteem and eating attitude of undergraduate students. Method: Data were drawn from a convenient sample of students (N=390). For the survey tool, it was used that the Body Attitudes Questionnaire(BAQ), Self Esteem Scale and Eating Attitude Test For Korean Adolescents(EAT-26KA). Results: Body-related attitude was differentiated by socio-demographic and physical variables : gender, living style, BMI, feeling fat by self, feeling fat by others. Self esteem was differentiated by socio-demographic and physical variables: schoolwork, image of the future, living style, family relationship, health status. Eating attitude was directly differentiated by socio-demographic and physical variables: living style, family relationship, feeling fat by self, feeling fat by others. Significant negative correlation was found between body-related attitude and self esteem. Significant positive correlation was found between body-related attitude and eating attitude. Also, significant negative correlation was found between self esteem and eating attitude. Conclusions: The results suggest that preventative intervention targeted at students with negative body-related attitude and low self esteem may be appropriate to preserve better eating attitude.
